Class Descriptions

The rhythm is going to get you.....

We have many classes here at Midwest School of Ballet to offer! See some of our class descriptions to find our more about our classes and what will be the best fit for you and your dancer.

Classes for ages 2.5-4 years

Dancers ages 2.5-4 will have their choice of either pre-ballet OR pre-tap
(or both!). In these classes, students will learn basic dance skills such as simple stretches, basic ballet and/or tap terms, basic ballet and/or tap steps, hand-eye coordination, balance, creative movement, and ballet and/or tap steps traveling across the floor. Students will learn the proper steps along with gentle corrections and encouragement to help them grow and progress through the class.

Dress Code for Pre-Ballet:
any color leotard or dance dress, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a ponytail, bun, or braids. Please NO STREET CLOTHES! Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants or shorts, and black ballet slippers.

Dress Code for Pre-Tap:
any color leotard or dance dress, pink tights, black "Mary Jane" style tap shoes, hair in a ponytail, bun, or braids. Please NO STREET CLOTHES! Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants or shorts, and black oxford style tap shoes.

Classes for ages 5-6 years

Dancers ages 5-6 years of age will have their choice from the following classes:
Ballet/Jazz
Students in our ballet/jazz class will have one half hour of ballet and one half hour of jazz. They will learn and execute more complex ballet and jazz stretches, terms, skills, and steps as they progress throughout the class. This is a great class for students who have high energy and also enjoy a lot of movement!

Dress Code for Ballet/Jazz:
any color leotard or dance dress, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a ponytail, bun, or braids. Please NO STREET CLOTHES! Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants or shorts, and black ballet slippers.

Ballet/Tap
Students in our ballet/tap class will have one half hour of ballet and one half hour of tap. They will learn and execute more complex ballet stretches, ballet and tap terms, skills, and steps as they progress throughout the class. This is a great class for students who enjoy making sounds as well as dancing along to music!

Dress code for Ballet/Tap:
any color leotard or dance dress, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a ponytail, bun, or braids. Please, NO STREET CLOTHES! Will also need black "Mary Jane" style tap shoes.
Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants or shorts, and black ballet slippers. Will also need black oxford style tap shoes.

Hip Hop
Students in our hip hop classes will be introduced to a jazz based warm up including some stretching to improve flexibility as well as isolations which are so important in hip hop dancing! Dancers will be learning the foundation of hip hop dancing, steps, and terminology to popular kid friendly music!

Hip Hop Dress Code: any color cami/tank top or t-shirt, any color track pants, basketball
shorts, sweat pants, and leggings. For footwear, any color/style of
CLEAN sneakers (sneakers that have not been worn outside).

Classes for ages 7-10 (level 1)

Students in our level 1 classes will begin learning more complex steps, skills, terminology, and stretches than in the pre-ballet/pre-tap classes as well as the ballet/jazz, ballet/tap, and hip hop (for 5-6) classes. All level 1 classes are on hour long and are dedicated to only one style of dance. Students are not required to take dance class prior to taking the level 1 classes, but are recommended. All classes will begin with a warm up in that style of dance, moving on to stretches and simple skills, followed by more complex skills and sometimes working on a piece of choreography to help train young dancers to put the steps together to a piece of music.

Student Dress Code:
Ballet: any color leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a bun. Dancers are also allowed to wear ballet shorts, ballet skirts, and ballet sweaters to the discretion of the instructor. NO STREET CLOTHES! Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants, and black ballet slippers. 

Jazz: any color leotard or cami top, Jazz pants, fitted jazz shorts, black or tan tights, suntan split sole jazz shoes, and hair in ponytail. Students may also wear fitted t-shirts, leggings (NO JEGGINGS!), and crop tops are okay.

Tap: dancers can wear close fitting t-shirt or tank top, close fitting shorts or basketball shorts, and tan split sole tap shoes for the ladies. Boys will need black tap shoes. Hair pulled back out of the face please.

Hip Hop: any color cami/tank top or t-shirt, any color track pants, basketball shorts, sweat pants, and leggings. For footwear, any color/style of CLEAN sneakers (sneakers that have not been worn outside).

Classes for ages 8-11 (level 2)

Students in level 2 classes will progress to learning and executing more complex stretches, skills/steps, terminology, progressions across the floor, and combinations. Classes will begin with a warm up, stretches, isolations (for jazz and hip hop), and various skills in the center as well as across the floor.
Classes availiable for level 2 include ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop.

Student Dress Code:
Ballet: any color leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a bun. Dancers are also allowed to wear ballet shorts, ballet skirts, and ballet sweaters to the discretion of the instructor. NO STREET CLOTHES! Boys:White or plain colored t-shirt (preferably fitted), black dance pants, and black ballet slippers. 

Jazz: any color leotard or cami top, Jazz pants, fitted jazz shorts, black or tan tights, suntan split sole jazz shoes, and hair in ponytail. Students may also wear fitted t-shirts, leggings (NO JEGGINGS!), and crop tops are okay.

Intermediate and Advanced Classes (ages 10+)

For our more experienced dancers, we offer several classes in the Intermedaite and Advanced level. Students will learn more complex steps, stretches, combinations, choreography, and improvisation to help them grow as dancers. These classes will help them not only advance as dancers, but also help to nurish and encourage their artform and craft. Classes in the intermediate and advanced levels include:
Ballet, pointe, tap, contemporary, Dance Productions, Jazz , and Hip Hop.

Student Dress Code
Ballet: any color leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers, hair in a bun. Dancers are also allowed to wear ballet shorts, ballet skirts, and ballet sweaters to the discretion of the instructor. NO STREET CLOTHES!

Jazz, Contemporary, Dance Productions, and Improvisation/Choreography class: Students will need to wear clothing that is close fitting such as leggings (NOT jeggings), tank top, slim fitting t-shirt, shorts, or crop top. Students will use shoes such as jazz shoes, half soles, or "dance paws". Students will be told what kind of shoes will be needed for the year in the first few weeks of class. Hair should be pulled back, preferably in a bun but can also wear braids or ponytail.

Teen Classes (ages 12+)

Our Teen classes are for dancers who are older and may not have much dance experience but wish learn! We offer classes in ballet, jazz, and hip hop with other styles to come in the future. For more information, please contact us via email or phone!

Student Dress Code
Ballet: leotard, pink tights, hair in bun (for short hair a headband is fine) and pink ballet slippers are all required. Students can also wear ballet skirts, leg warmers, ballet shorts, and/or a ballet sweater. NO STREET CLOTHES!

Jazz: any color leotard or cami top, Jazz pants, fitted jazz shorts, black or tan tights, suntan split sole jazz shoes, and hair in ponytail. Students may also wear fitted t-shirts, leggings (NO JEGGINGS!), and crop tops.

Hip Hop: any color cami/tank top or t-shirt, any color track pants, basketball shorts, sweat pants, and leggings. For footwear, any color/style of CLEAN sneakers (sneakers that have not been worn outside.

Contemporary: Students will need to wear clothing that is close fitting such as
leggings (NOT jeggings), tank top, slim fitting t-shirt, shorts, or crop top. Students will use shoes such as jazz shoes, half soles, "dance paws". This will be at the instructor's decision and students will recieve notice as to what style of shoes in their first few weeks of class.

Stretches, Turns, and Leaps (ages 7+)

For dancers who are wanting to increase their flexibility, turn skills, and leap skills this is the class for them! Dancers will have a warm up and work on conditioning and skills to help with turns, jumps, and leaps. This is a required class for dancers who wish to take contmproary, dance tricks, and/or on any of our competition teams. We currently offer 3 different levels of stretches/turns/leaps classes.

Student Dress Code
Students will need to wear clothing that is close fitting such as leggings (NOT jeggings), tank top, slim fitting t-shirt, shorts, or crop top. Students will use shoes such as jazz shoes, half soles, "dance
paws" or ballet slippers. Studnets are not required to have all the pairs of shoes, butthey should have at least one pair of listed shoes for class. Hair should be pulled back, preferably in a bun but can also wear braids or ponytail.

Dance Tricks (ages 7+)

Dance Tricks is a great class for students who not only want to increase their strength and skills but also safely learn some new and more advanced skills that can be used in many areas of dance. A co-requisite will be a stretches/turns/leaps class and/or a ballet class or another technique class. For more information, please contact Meagan. We currently offer 2 levels of dance tricks classes, with the potential of more levels.

Student Dress Code
Students will need to wear clothing that is close fitting such as leggings (NOT jeggings), tank top, slim fitting t-shirt, shorts, or crop top. Students will use shoes such as jazz shoes, half soles, or "dance paws". Studnets are not required to have all the pairs of shoes, butthey should have at least one pair of listed shoes for class. Hair should be pulled back, preferably in a bun but can also
wear braids or ponytail.

Dance Conditioning (ages 7+)

Our dance conditioning classes are a requirement for our company members (our competition team) but are open to all dancers! In these classes, dancers will have a certified fitness as their instructor and will be working on strengthening and fitness exercises that will help them in their other dance classes.

Student Dress Code
Students will need to wear clothing that is close fitting such as leggings (NOT jeggings), tank top, slim fitting t-shirt, shorts, or crop top. Students will need clean sneakers for this class. Hair should be pulled back, preferably in a bun but can also wear braids or ponytail.

MSB Dance Company
(Competition Team. ages 7+)

Dancers who are interested in our Company Team (competition team) should contact Meagan via email at Meagan@midwestschoolofballet.com for more information. In the summer students are asked to take part in a dance camp where they will learn short pieces of choreography they will perform for 3 or more judges at the Company audition in the summer. Details on auditions can be found on our home page in the summer.
